2026 Flamboro Speedway - Mini Stock Invitational

The popular Mini Stock category offers new drivers an opportunity to compete in an entry-level stock car class. Rules are written to keep costs to a minimum.

The Mini Stock division is open to any 2010 or older approved 4-cylinder automobile with an engine no larger than 2500 cc. The cars may be front or rear-wheel drive. Rules prohibit convertibles, 4-wheel drives, trucks, BMWs, Audis, Saabs with turbo, V-Tec, supercharged, or rotary engines. Also excluded are mid or rear-engine vehicles. The weight of the cars is determined by the engine displacement and cylinder head design.

The body must retain its stock appearance - no chopping, channeling or sectioning is allowed.

Safety is a major concern in this division. Mini Stocks are fitted with a roll cage, fuel cell, five-point quick-release belts (shoulder and lap), aluminum racing seat and a window net.

Some of the makes and models typically raced by competitors include the Ford Mustang, Nissan 240SX, Acura Integra, Honda Civic and Pontiac Sunfire.

On August 1, Flamboro Speedway invited the American National Compact Touring Series to compete with their Canadian counterparts. The National Compact Touring Series features front-wheel-drive compact touring cars. Unlike the Canadian Mini Stock rules, teams are allowed to use 4 or 6-cylinder engines, which gives a distinct advantage to American National Compact Touring competitors.

A healthy purse of $1,000 USD going to the winner and a $150 USD to start attracted twenty-five teams.

Drivers competed in a fifty-lap contest around Flamboro’s 1/3-mile semi-banked asphalt oval in an event called the Canadian Sport Compact Nationals.

Flamboro staff decided on a fourteen-car invert after the qualifying session. Starting on the pole is the No. 06 HWY 400 Transmissions of Chris Cunnington. Beside Cunnington is Gary Triska driving the No. 26BT Rick's Heating & Cooling Pontiac Sunfire. Behind the leaders in row two are the No. 95 Gen One Honda Civic of Michael Robinson III and No. 44 Tri Crane Nissan 240SX driven by Roland Goodfellow. Twenty-two cars started the contest.

Doug Butler found himself starting thirteenth for the fifty-lap contest at Flamboro Speedway. Under similar circumstances last evening, he started tenth at Delaware Speedway’s Mini Stock event and won driving the No. 10 HWY 90 Nissan 240SX. At Flamboro, Butler has moved up to second, but Shawn Taylor had stretched out a comfortable lead. On lap 18, Butler got the caution period he needed. Two circuits later Butler grabbed the lead and victory.

Last night, Flamboro Speedway regular Shawn Taylor competed in Delaware’s Mini Stock event. The outcome saw the driver of the No. 76 GM Electric Nissan 240SX finish in the runner-up position to Doug Butler. At the Canadian Sport Compact Nationals, Taylor was fifth fastest in qualifying and started tenth. Taylor moved to the front early when the first caution was displayed. He lost the lead to Butler and finished second by 1.011 seconds.

Another driver familiar with Flamboro Speedway is Tyler Lewis. Lewis entered the event just three weeks after his wife gave birth. He drove the No. 59 Slack Steel Service-sponsored Honda Civic and was gridded 11th for the Canadian Sport Compact Nationals. Lewis moved up quickly and by lap 20 was in fourth place. With the retirement of Eric Pomasko, he inherited third place and held the position to the checkered flag.

Former Flamboro Mini Stock track champion Mike Thomson sits fourth in this season’s Klotz Auto Repair standings. Thomson competed the previous evening at Delaware’s Mini Stock Invitational and finished fourth. He started seventh at Flamboro driving the No. 16 Al Borgo Estates Winery Ford Mustang. Thomson spun on lap 4 of the race and dropped to last place. He spent the remainder of the contest charging through the field to finish fourth.

The competitor that has driven the most laps around Flamboro Speedway this season is Matt Young. Young is the points leader in the Klotz Auto Repair Mini Stock class and competes in the Hogan Law & McClurkin Properties Pure Stock division. He also competed in the Delaware Mini Stock event and finished fifth in the Blue Streaking Contracting Acura Integra. At Flamboro, Young started in the third position and collected another fifth-place result.

There were five cars entered from the National Compact Touring Series. Unfortunately, only the No. 18 of Dalton Irish and Eric Pomasko in the No. 71 car were able to start the Canadian Sport Compact Nationals. There was early concern among Canadian teams that the American entries, with their 6-cylinder engines, would dominate the event. Irish started fourteenth and finished thirteenth, while Pomasko was fifteenth after starting twelfth.

The three consecutive days of racing during the Simcoe Day weekend have become an unofficial championship for Mini Stock competitors. It began Friday with Delaware’s Mini Stock Invitational, followed by Flamboro’s Canadian Sport Compact Nationals and ending with Sauble Speedway’s Mini Stock Invitational. However, Chris Pinder’s journey began Thursday at Laird Speedway. Pinder planned to compete in the four events, but Sauble was rained out.
