Now in its thirty-sixth year, the Ontario Stock Car Association of Asphalt Racers
(OSCAAR) is responsible for sanctioning three divisions: Super Late Model, Modified and Hot Rod.
One of the most unique classes on the Ontario oval scene is the Hot Rod division. The Hot Rods are cars or pickup trucks that must have been manufactured in North America. They must have a steel body and have been built from 1949 to 1986. Convertibles or front-wheel-drive vehicles are not eligible for the series. The Hot Rods must have a stock roof, grill, and taillights, and the rest of the body panels can be fabricated from 22-gauge sheet steel, but must retain a stock appearance. Many other rules governing this class are for safety and to keep the costs down. The cars competing in the championship are constructed to specifications and rules common to most stock car series. Any full perimeter chassis permitted. Right and left frame rails should be an equal distance from the frame centerline. A four-point racing roll cage is mandatory, along with additional safety bars. There are five engine options available from General Motors, Ford, or Chrysler; these also determine the vehicle's weight and RPM limit. Weight distribution is limited to 55% on the left side.
All engines are equipped with a Holley 500 CFM Two Barrel R4412 carburetor. There are also rules governing manual and automatic transmissions. New for this season, teams will compete on Cobra tires mounted on 15”X10” steel wheels. Eleven races are on the 2026 OSCAAR Hot Rod schedule.
The third race of the 2026 OSCAAR Fyre Place and Patio Shop Hot Rod season was held at ‘Canada’s Toughest 1/3-Mile Oval,’ Peterborough Speedway. Hot Rod drivers competed in two heat races and a thirty-lap feature.

It’s taken Tyler Hawn a couple of races to come to terms with the series’ new Cobra Tires. On Saturday evening, it appeared that the team found the right setup. Hawn was entered in heat two and finished fourth and grabbed a second place in heat four. The No. 2 1966 Pontiac Beaumont lined up on the outside of the front row for the thirty-lap contest. Hawn charged into the lead after the race’s first restart and went unchallenged for the win. |

Finishing in the runner-up position was OSCAAR Fyre Place and Patio Shop Hot Rod Rookie Points Leader, Jacob Booth. The series newcomer competed in last season’s Super Stock series at Sunset Speedway. Driving the No. 73 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle, he finished third in heat two and second in heat three. Booth started the feature in the sixth spot. His charge to the front began early. Booth advanced to second but could not challenge Tyler Hawn. |

After a couple of seasons in Sunset Speedway’s Hot Rod division, Canadian Motorsport Hall of Famer Tom Walters rejoined the OSCAAR Fyre Place and Patio Shop Hot Rod Series. He lost an engine in the previous round at Delaware, but the No. 47W 1965 Rambler Ambassador proved to be ready at Peterborough as he won both his heats. He was gridded fifth for the finale and moved to second before being passed by Jacob Booth and finishing third. |

It’s difficult to label Lane Zardo a rookie when he has the 2025 Steel City Rumble and Dayco Super Stock titles on his racing resume. However, he made only one series start last season, which ended in disaster. This year, Zardo pilots the No. 48 1962 Ford Thunderbird. Despite being a new build, the Ford finished second in its debut. Zardo collected second- and third-place results in the heats. In the feature, he started on the pole and led briefly before finishing fourth. |

Daniel Hawn, the brother of Tyler Hawn, also enters the OSCAAR Fyre Place and Patio Shop Hot Rod Series as a rookie with an impressive racing record. Hawn is well known for his success in the Can-Am Midget Series. This season he is campaigning the No. 42 1976 Oldsmobile Omega. Hawn was the runner-up in heat one and finished fourth in heat four. Unable to hold off Jacob Booth and Tom Walters in the feature, he finished fifth. |
