2026 Delaware Speedway - OSCAAR Hot Rod Series

Now in its thirty-sixth year, the Ontario Stock Car Association of Asphalt Racers (OSCAAR) is responsible for sanctioning three divisions: Super Late Model, Modified and Hot Rod.

One of the most unique classes on the Ontario oval scene is the Hot Rod division. The Hot Rods are cars or pickup trucks that must have been manufactured in North America. They must have a steel body and have been built from 1949 to 1986. Convertibles or front-wheel-drive vehicles are not eligible for the series. The Hot Rods must have a stock roof, grill, and taillights, and the rest of the body panels can be fabricated from 22-gauge sheet steel, but must retain a stock appearance. Many other rules governing this class are for safety and to keep the costs down.

The cars competing in the championship are constructed to specifications and rules common to most stock car series.

Any full perimeter chassis permitted. Right and left frame rails should be an equal distance from the frame centerline. A four-point racing roll cage is mandatory, along with additional safety bars.

There are five engine options available from General Motors, Ford, or Chrysler; these also determine the vehicle's weight and RPM limit. Weight distribution is limited to 55% on the left side.

GM Red Seal Crate Engine – 3,050 lbs. – 6,400 rpm

GM Blue Seal Crate Engine – 3,080 lbs. – 6,400 rpm

Built Engine - 3175 lbs. – 6,800 rpm

Built Engine with Vortec Cylinder Heads – 3,225 lbs. – 6,400 rpm

Full Throttle LS Spec Engine – 3,050 lbs. – 6,800 rpm

All engines are equipped with a Holley 500 CFM Two Barrel R4412 carburetor.

There are also rules governing manual and automatic transmissions.

New for this season, teams will compete on Cobra tires mounted on 15”X10” steel wheels.

Eleven races are on the 2026 OSCAAR Hot Rod schedule.

The second round of the OSCAAR Hot Rod Series was held at Delaware Speedway during the track’s Canada Day Weekend event. Hot Rod drivers competed in a heat race and a twenty-five-lap feature around Delaware’s half-mile semi-banked asphalt oval.

Sixteen The Fyre Place and Patio Shop Hot Rod drivers enter Delaware Speedway’s first turn for the second race of the 2026 season. On the pole is the No. 47 1960 Studebaker Hawk driven by Steve Book. Beside Book is series newcomer Daniel Hawn in the No. 42 1977 Oldsmobile Omega. Behind the front row are the No. 47T 1974 Chevrolet Camaro of Thomas Wunsch and Drew Richardson in the No. 8X 1977 Chevrolet Camaro.

Since purchasing the former Amanda Balson 1974 Chevrolet Camaro, Thomas Wunsch has been a threat for a feature victory. On Saturday afternoon at Delaware Speedway, he collected his first OSCAAR Hot Rod win. Wunsch participated in the second of two Heat Races and finished third. He lined up in the third spot for the twenty-five-lap feature. By lap 3, Wunsch was in the lead. Despite a couple of restarts, the rest of the field was never a threat.

Last season, Dayco Super Stock champion Lane Zardo debuted a 1970 Dodge Charger Daytona. Unfortunately, a coolant leak caused him to hit the wall and roll the car. This year, Zardo returns with a 1962 Ford Thunderbird. He was entered in the second Heat Race and moved from third to take the victory. Zardo was gridded fifth for the finale and moved into second place, finishing behind Thomas Wunsch by a margin of 3.316 seconds.

Dalen Martin only enters the No. 26 1971 Ford Mach 1 Mustang in selected events, but is always a threat for the victory. Martin was entered in Heat Race Two and started in the fifth position. He staged a terrific battle with Tyler Hawn and prevailed to finish second. Martin started the feature in the sixth position. During the race, he passed Steve Book, Daniel Hawn, and Drew Richardson. As a result, he was rewarded with a third-place finish.

Jay Doerr is a Delaware Speedway regular who participates in the track’s Wild Printing V8 Stock Series. Unique to Delaware, the V8 class is restricted to eight-cylinder cars and trucks. Competitors must not go faster than a lap time of 21.1 seconds. Going under the lap time results in a stop-and-go penalty. Doer drove the No. 5 1972 Chevrolet Nova SS and finished fourth in his Heat. In the feature, he moved from the eighth spot to finish fourth.

Last season, Jacob Booth competed in the St. Onge Recreation Super Stock Series. However, with the demise of Sunset Speedway, he has joined the Fyre Place & Patio Shop OSCAAR Hot Rods presented by Bromley Automotive Ltd championship. This year, Booth drives the No. 73 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle with support from Big Bryan and Sons Towing. In his series debut at Sauble Speedway, Booth finished sixth. At Delaware, he was fifth and moved up to fifth in the point standings.

The No. 47 1960 Studebaker Hawk is piloted by Steve Book. The three-time OSCAAR Hot Rod champion joined the series in 2018. In the first race of the season at Sauble Speedway, he finished sixth. At Delaware Speedway, Book competed in Heat One and was victorious. He started the finale on the pole, but during the race, Book slid down the order and crossed the finish line in seventh place. However, he is second in the points chase.

Wunsch demonstrated great speed last season; it was only a matter of time before he claimed his first victory. The result moved him to the top of the standings. On the right is the runner-up, Lane Zardo. Completing the top three is Dalen Martin.
