With Ontario provincial COVID mandates still in place, the 2021 race season got off to a late start. The opening round of the St. Onge Recreation Super Stock series was held on June 19, during the Melissa Bullen Memorial event.

The Super Stock category includes a variety of makes and models. Cars may retain the original steel bodies with plastic noses and fiberglass hoods; however, most competitors use fiberglass body panels.

All frame components must be stock unless otherwise stated, with no lightening. A full roll cage constructed out of 1 3/4 x .095 min. round steel tubing must be welded to the chassis. The roll cage must be symmetrical in all directions. Similarly, all suspension and frame components must be stock unless otherwise stated. No modification of stock suspension locating points unless otherwise stated. Mounts for upper control arms can be changed to any location or height.

The cars may be equipped with dual racing master cylinders or a stock single master cylinder. A brake proportioning valve is allowed. OEM-type single-piston calipers or Howe single-piston steel calipers are also permitted.

Super Stocks are powered by a Built small-block engine or Crate motor from General Motors and Ford. Depending on the engine choice, a car may weigh as little as 3,000 lbs or as much as 3,200 lbs. All engines are fitted with a Holley 500 CFM two-barrel R4412 carburetor.

The cars must use unaltered manual OEM transmission - 3- or 4-speed steel gearboxes. All gears must be operational, including reverse.

Drivers compete on American Racer AR 870 tires mounted on 15 X 8 steel wheels. Tire rules have been implemented to reduce expenses. Teams are limited to 6 tires for their first race.

The division serves as a stepping stone for drivers who aspire to compete in the Pro Late Model category.

On August 14, the APC United Late Model Series made their first 2021 visit to Sunset Speedway. They were joined by the G.D. Coates Used Car Superstore Mini Stocks and St. Onge Recreation Super Stocks.

The final starting grid for the St. Onge Recreation Super Stocks was set by points and the results of the heat races. The competitors then raced in a thirty-lap feature around Sunset’s 1/3-mile asphalt banked oval.

The pace lap and fifteen St. Onge Super Stock competitors round corners one and two for a thirty-lap contest. On the pole is the No. 83 North Country Property Maintenance Chevrolet Camaro of Johnny Morrison. Beside Morrison is Gerrit Tiemersma driving the No. 17 Wayfreight / Line X Ford Mustang. In the second row are Tom Walters in the No. 47 B & B Towing Chevrolet SS and Frank Davey in the No. 49 Green Steel Roof Chevrolet SS.
The No. 52 Simcoe Barge & Break Wall Chevrolet SS was driven by Brandon Passer. Passer was entered in the second heat and finished third. In heat four, he went one better, finishing in the runner-up spot. Passer was gridded ninth for the feature. He avoided many of the on-track incidents and grabbed the lead on the lap 15 restart. Despite two late-race restarts, Passer held on for the victory.
Tom Walters, a member of the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame, has 30 championships to his credit. This season Walters competes in the No. 47 B & B Towing Chevrolet SS. He raced in heat two and finished a distant fifth place. Walters struggled in heat four and finished sixth. He lined up third for the feature and was the leader by lap 11. On a restart, Walters was passed by Brandon Passer. He challenged Passer but had to settle for second place.
Former Sunset Speedway Super Stock track champion Dwayne Baker pilots the No. 48 G.D. Coates Used Car Superstore Chevrolet Camaro. Baker collected third and sixth place results in his heat races. He started the thirty-lap St. Onge Recreation feature in the sixth position and quickly moved into the top five. He avoided much of the contact during the race. At the checkered flag, Baker crossed the finish line in third place.
Frank Davey’s first spin of the event came early in the third heat when there was contact with the No. 83 North Country Property Maintenance Chevrolet Camaro driven by Johnny Morrison. The reigning St. Onge Super Stock champion started fourth in the feature driving the No. 49 Green Steel Roof Chevrolet SS. On lap three, Davey spun when Matt Bentley hit him. He continued but would never be in contention and finished tenth.
Gerrit Tiemersma is a third-generation driver who races the No. 17 Wayfreight / Line X Ford Mustang. After a win in the second heat, he had good reason to be optimistic about his chances in the feature. Tiemersma led early but fell to third on lap 10. Three circuits later, contact with Lane Zardo required him to pit. He charged through the field but hit the wall on the final lap and was classified with an eleventh-place result.
The No. 8 Canadian Tire Port Elgin / Saugeen Shores Transmission Chevrolet Camaro was driven by Jason Parker. Parker was victorious in the first heat race. He participated in the third heat and finished as a runner-up. Parker was in the seventh position for the start of the feature. He followed Dwanye Baker and moved up the order. Able to avoid many of the contest’s incidents, Parker finished fourth.
