The popular Mini Stock category offers new drivers an opportunity to compete in an entry-level stock car class.
Rules are written to keep costs to a minimum.
The Mini Stock division is open to any 2010-and-older approved 4-cylinder automobile with an engine no larger than 2500 cc. The cars may be front or rear-wheel drive. Rules prohibit convertibles, 4-wheel drives, trucks, BMWs, Audis, Saabs with turbo, V-Tec, supercharged, or rotary engines. Also excluded are mid or rear-engine vehicles. The weight of the cars is determined by the engine displacement and cylinder head design. The body must retain its stock appearance - no chopping, channeling or sectioning is allowed. Safety is a major concern in this division. Mini Stocks are fitted with a roll cage, fuel cell, five-point quick-release belts (shoulder and lap), aluminum racing seat and a window net. Some of the makes and models typically raced by competitors include the Ford Mustang, Nissan 240SX, Acura Integra, Honda Civic and Pontiac Sunfire. The APC United Late Model Series first 2021 visit to Sunset Speedway was on August 14. Joining the Late Models as support events were the St. Onge Super Stocks and G.D. Coates Used Car Superstore Mini Stocks. The G.D. Coates Used Car Superstore Mini Stocks final starting grid was set by points and the results from heat races. Mini Stock competitors competed in a twenty-five-lap feature around Sunset’s 1/3-mile asphalt banked oval.

It was an emotional event for Josh Bullen and his family. Bullen was driving his late sister Melissa’s No. 67 Ryan's Landscaping Ford Mustang. Bullen started second in the first heat and claimed the victory. He lined up tenth for the feature and advanced early. By lap 4, Bullen was in the lead and pulling away from the field. Despite numerous restarts, he was able to hold first place. Bullen was in the top spot when the contest was flagged early. |

Flamboro Speedway regular Shawn Taylor made the trip to Sunset Speedway. The driver of the No. 76 B.W. Haggart Crane Rentals Nissan 240SX finished fifth in the second heat race after starting seventh. In the feature, Taylor was gridded twelfth but wasted little time moving up the scoreboard. By lap five, he was in third place. Seven circuits later, Taylor passed the No. 6 Acura Integra of Curtis Stewart for second. He held the position to the checker. |

Another Flamboro Speedway driver entered at Sunset Speedway was Cole Quinton. Quinton pilots the No. 18 Spira Fire Protection Ford Mustang. He started the twenty-five-lap feature in the eleventh position. With the drop of the green flag, Quinton began his journey to the front. By the seventh lap, he had moved into fourth place. Three circuits later, Quinton caught and passed the No. 6 Acura Integra of Curtis Stewart for a third-place result. |

G.D. Coates Used Car Superstore Mini Stock regular Curtis Stewart drove the No. 6 Lakeside Auto / Big Rock Landscaping Acura Integra. Stewart competed in the first heat race, where he finished fourth after lining up sixth. He was gridded sixth for the feature. Stewart moved to second place after some early passes. However, he could not keep pace with Shawn Taylor and Cole Quinton and finished fourth. |

The twenty-five-lap G.D. Coates Used Car Superstore Mini Stock event featured multiple caution periods. On lap nineteen, the No. 46 Local 46 Superior Piping Skills Dodge Neon driven by Ryan D'Antimo and Ken Townsend in the No. 21 Deco Window Fashions Honda Civic tangled on the front straight. In an effort to avoid the incident, Bob Phinnermore, driving the No. 1 Tarpin Lumber & Truss / Chevrolet Cobalt, hit the pit wall. Officials decided to end the race. |
