2021 Flamboro Speedway

The popular Mini Stock category offers new drivers an opportunity to compete in an entry-level stock car class. Rules are written to keep costs to a minimum.

The Mini Stock division is open to any 2010-and-older approved 4-cylinder automobile with an engine no larger than 2500 cc. The cars may be front or rear-wheel drive. Rules prohibit convertibles, 4-wheel drives, trucks, BMWs, Audis, Saabs with turbo, V-Tec, supercharged, or rotary engines. Also excluded are mid or rear-engine vehicles. The weight of the cars is determined by the engine displacement and cylinder head design.

The body must retain its stock appearance - no chopping, channeling or sectioning is allowed.

Safety is a major concern in this division. Mini Stocks are fitted with a roll cage, fuel cell, five-point quick-release belts (shoulder and lap), aluminum racing seat and a window net.

Some of the makes and models typically raced by competitors include the Ford Mustang, Nissan 240SX, Acura Integra, Honda Civic and Pontiac Sunfire.

Many divisions participated in this year’s edition of Frostoberfest at Flamboro Speedway. One of the groups was Mini Stocks, which competed in a fifty-lap contest around the 0.333-mile semi-banked asphalt oval. As an incentive for drivers to enter, the winner received a $1,000 prize.

Twenty-two Mini Stock competitors charge into Flamboro Speedway’s corner one. Leading is the pole-sitter, Bobby Mercer, driving the No. 2 Royal Pet Grooming Honda Accord Wagon and Karl Sault in the No. 81 NAPA Waterdown sponsored Acura Integra. Behind the leaders is the No. 24 Innisfil Garage Door Honda Civic of Jeff Laflamme and Shawn Taylor driving the No. 76 Kangaroo Trailers / GM Electric Nissan 240SX.

Flamboro regular Karl Salt drives the No. 81 NAPA Waterdown sponsored Acura Integra. Salt started the fifty-lap Frostoberfest Mini Stock event on the outside of the front row. At the start of the contest, he dropped in behind the pole-sitter, Bobby Mercer. On lap 8, he was passed by Shawn Taylor, followed by Jeff Laflamme. By midway through the race, he had moved back to second and passed Taylor on lap 42 for the victory.

Shawn Taylor, the driver of the No. 76 Kangaroo Trailers / GM Electric Nissan 240SX, is also a regular at Flamboro Speedway. Taylor lined up fourth for the Frostoberfest Mini Stock event. At the drop of the green flag, he jumped to third and slotted in behind Karl Sault. Taylor passed Sault and began pushing the leader, Bobby Mercer. With twenty-two laps remaining, Taylor took the lead. However, he was passed by Sault and finished second.

Cole Quinton pilots the No. 18 Spira Fire Protection Ford Mustang. The division's newest competitor was gridded fifth for the Frostoberfest contest. At the start, he settled in behind the leaders and held fifth until lap thirty-two, when he passed Bobby Mercer and Jeff Laflamme for third. Quinton kept the position to the checkered flag and finished third.

Sunset Speedway’s Jeff Laflamme entered Frostoberfest in the No. 24 Innisfil Garage Door Honda Civic. He qualified third-fastest, but a poor start dropped him to fourth. He later passed Karl Sault for third, before Sault regained the position and Laflamme lost another spot to a hard-charging Cole Quinton. The final restart gave Laflamme a chance to challenge the leaders, but he was unable to make a pass and finished fourth.

Bobby Mercer purchased the unique and successful No. 2 Royal Pet Grooming Honda Accord Station Wagon from Gillian Hils. Mercer started the Mini Stock contest on the pole and charged into an early lead. He then came under pressure from Karl Sault and later Shawn Taylor. With twenty-three laps remaining, the Honda began smoking and Mercer retired on lap 37.
