2020 Flamboro Speedway

The popular Mini Stock category offers new drivers an opportunity to compete in an entry-level stock car class. Rules are written to keep costs to a minimum.

The Mini Stock division is open to any 2010-and-older approved 4-cylinder automobile with an engine no larger than 2500 cc. The cars may be front or rear-wheel drive. Rules prohibit convertibles, 4-wheel drives, trucks, BMWs, Audis, Saabs with turbo, V-Tec, supercharged, or rotary engines. Also excluded are mid or rear-engine vehicles. The weight of the cars is determined by the engine displacement and cylinder head design.

The body must retain its stock appearance - no chopping, channeling or sectioning is allowed.

Safety is a major concern in this division. Mini Stocks are fitted with a roll cage, fuel cell, five-point quick-release belts (shoulder and lap), aluminum racing seat and a window net.

Some of the makes and models typically raced by competitors include the Ford Mustang, Nissan 240SX, Acura Integra, Honda Civic and Pontiac Sunfire.

One of the many divisions at Flamboro Speedway’s Frostoberfest event was the Mini Stocks. In this division, drivers competed in a forty-lap contest around Flamboro’s 1/3-mile semi-banked asphalt oval.

Twenty-six Mini Stock competitors entered Flamboro Speedway’s front straight for the forty-lap Frostoberfest event. On the pole was the fastest qualifier, Will Gibbons, in the No. 10 Speedy Auto Works Honda CRX. Beside Gibbons was Kevin Bridge driving the No. 17 LiUNA! sponsored Honda Civic. In the second row were Samantha Shaw in the No. 81 Spira Fire Protection Ford Mustang and Brian Wilson in the No. 14 Caldecott Nissan 240SX.

Will Gibbons entered the Frostoberfest event with a single objective: to win one of the prized Igloos. He put the No. 10 Speedy Auto Works Honda CRX on the pole with a time of 17.425 seconds. His main threat for most of the event came from the second-fastest qualifier, Kevin Bridge. Gibbons endured several restarts and was successful each time. He led flag-to-flag for the victory and Igloo.

Flamboro Speedway regular Karl Sault was entered in his familiar No. 81 NAPA Waterdown Acura Integra. Sault was fourth fastest during the qualifying session. However, he elected to start at the rear of the field with a chance to earn the bonus money for a victory. He moved through the field at a rapid pace and was helped by the many cautions. By the halfway mark, he was sixth. Sault passed Kevin Bridge on the final lap for second place.

Kevin Bridge raced the No. 17 LiUNA! sponsored Honda Civic. His best lap during qualifying was 17.580 seconds, which landed him on the outside of the front row. At the start of the forty-lap contest, he slotted in behind Will Gibbons. Bridge was fast enough to match Gibbons’ pace, but despite several opportunities, he was unable to grab the lead. On the final lap, he failed to keep Karl Sault behind him and finished third.

Another Flamboro Speedway regular is Shawn Taylor. Taylor pilots the No. 76 B.W. Haggart Crane Rentals / Kangaroo Trailers Nissan 240SX. During the qualifying session, he was seventh fastest. In the race, Taylor traded positions with the Ford Mustangs of Samantha Shaw and Jake Watson. Late-race contact between Shaw and Watson moved Taylor into third place, but he was unable to hold off Karl Sault and finished fourth.

On the lap 35 restart, there was contact between the No. 81 Spira Ford Mustang of Samantha Shaw and Jake Watson driving the No. 88 Curt's Coolers Ford Mustang. Shaw spun and was hit by the No. 18 London Recreational Racing Chevrolet Cobalt of Chris Pendlebury. Pendlebury was eliminated from the event. Shaw continued and finished eighth after starting third. Watson fared better with a sixth-place result.

The top three finishers for the Mini Stock division at Flamboro Speedway’s Frostoberfest event are shown here. In the center is the winner, Will Gibbons, who led flag-to-flag. On the left is the runner-up, Karl Sault. Sault accepted the challenge of relinquishing his fourth-place starting position and going to the rear of the field for an opportunity to earn the bonus money. The final position is occupied by the third-place finisher, Kevin Bridge.
